Yaak, MontanaWriters' Workshop in Yaak, Montana

Friday, October 7, 2016 - Monday, October 9, 2016

Join Rick Bass for a three day workshop, bringing together a small group of dedicated writers for a supportive and rigorous weekend focusing on voice and craft, hosted at a private riverside lodge in northwest Montana's Yakk Valley, Montana.

Expect a hands-on critical boot camp with active workshopping and craft-focused discussion. We’ll examine the role of landscape and culture in essays. How much is enough, how much is too little, how much, too much? We’ll discuss the work of students as well as advanced practitioners. Adverbs will be taxed hard. Recommended reading in fiction and nonfiction will be included, as the elements of fiction will prove useful in essays.

Workshop students will arrive Friday, October 7th for an orientation to the Yaak Valley in the most beautiful week of the year and introduction to fellow students. Saturday and Sunday will be workshop-focused with group and one-on-one conferences, followed by an evening lecture. Students will have the opportunity to rest or play as hard as they work, and there will be free time available for an evening at the local tavern and activities such as hiking or bike-riding.

Rick will also offer an optional, donation based natural history/art-and-landscape hike on Monday October 5th for which all proceeds benefit the Yaak Valley Forest Council.

Participation will be limited to 10-12 writers. Manuscript lengths should be 15-18 double-spaced pages.

Cost: $1,275 includes the three-day workshop and full course meals provided each day, all diets accomodated upon request. A minimum donation of $125 is requested for the optional Monday hike.

Transportation: Kalispell is the closest airport and approximately 2.5 hours away. Flights to Spokane are often less expensive and only 3 hrs 15 minutes away. Missoula is 4 hrs 15 minutes away but the prettiest drive.

Lodging: Lodging and meals included in workshop price.
